As mentioned here, I was lucky enough to final in the 2012 RWA Golden Heart Awards. But I was also lucky enough to win my category. Of course I had no clue that was going to happen–there were so many talented authors in Paranormal Romance: A.J. Larrieu, Donna S. Frelick, Marni Folsom, Pamela Kopfler, Kay Hudson, and Laurie A. Green–that I thought I had no chance at all of winning. But I was told time and again that I MUST have a speech prepared, just in case. I wrote something so when anyone asked me whether I’d done it, I wouldn’t have to lie when I told them I had.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, I was indeed forced to use that speech…and here it is.
“When fellow-finalist Rachel Grant told us to have a speech ready whether we thought we had a chance of winning or not, she really knew what she was talking about. (Thank you Rachel).
I sat down, and tried to write a speech. And failed. So I went back to a major source of inspiration for me – the world of 90’s sitcoms.
Yo, this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down.
I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I wound up
A Golden Heart Winn-Air.
In Eastern Oklahoma, born and raised
In a library is where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, reading, relaxing all cool.
Living as a bookworm outside of the school
When a couple of times, a book was so good
I Started thinking maybe write one, I could
I wrote one little chapter and then I got scared
But I thought, nah forget it, I’ll try for a pair
I took a few classes, and read some more books
And pretty soon felt I’d developed my hook
Several chapters later I wrote to the end
And when Lorie H called me I stood there and grinned.”
Thank you RWA for supporting budding authors like myself, and thank you very much to the published authors for writing the most fantastic textbooks. You made my year.”
And for more Golden Heart fun, I highly recommend Rachel Grant’s GH squee moment (complete with audio!)
